The University of Tampa Spartans scored their first big win of the SSC against Eckerd College Tritons. This was the Tritons first loss of the conference, suffering a tough loss 73-71. In a back and forth affair, the Spartans came out on top.
With an assist from Jerrick Stevenson, Ray Darnell scores the first two points of the game for the Tritons. Eckerd College went on to take a 7 – 2 lead against the Spartans. UT responded with an 11-2 run, capturing its first lead of the night, 13-2. UT held a ten point lead over Eckerd midway through the first half. At the end of the half, the Tritons only trailed by three, 35-32. Senior Eugene McRory led the half for the Spartans with 12 points and 5 rebounds.The back and forth continued well into the second half of the game, as both teams left it all on the court. UT maintained the lead until Stevenson knocked down a three point shot at the 13:51 mark. The Tritons one point lead soon expanded into a five point lead over the Spartans. With less than four minutes of play left on the clock, UT regained its lead over Eckerd, 61-60.
The two teams went bucket for bucket. Matt Johnson layup gave Tampa the final lead of the night. With 20 seconds left, the Tritons are down by six. Walsh drained a three from downtown, putting the Tritons within one, 72-71. Eckerd had a chance for the lead and victory when Johnson missed one out of his two free throws. However, they were unable to produce sealing UT victory.
