The University of South Florida Bulls will start the 2017 football season on the road in San Jose, California against the San Jose State Spartans. The game will be broadcast by CBSSN and start at 7:30 ET on August 26th.
The Spartans are led by a rookie head coach in Brent Brennan and are coming off a 4-8 season in 2016. Currently there is a 4 way battle for the starting QB, but they do return most of their leading rushers and receivers. Running backs Malik Roberson and Zamore Zigler along with receivers Justin Holmes and Tre Hartley should give the Bulls some challenges on defense. On defense the Spartans are switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense after a season in which they ranked 122nd in rush defense. The secondary is solid but probably didn’t face many challenges as teams were running at will on them.
Bulls QB Quinton Flowers along with running backs D’Ernest Johnson and Daruis Tice are probably licking their chops at the opportunity for a huge ground games against a struggling Spartan defense. Although the Bulls defense had some pitfalls last year, facing a new qb in his first game should help regain some confidence. Even though the game is on the road, expect the Bulls to put up some points and put the game out of reach by the second half. Expect the Bulls to run over 300 yards on offense, maybe even 350 as the Bulls should have a fun trip back home.
