The Hawks are #3 in NJCAA

IMG_5105The Hillsborough Community College Volleyball team, the Lady Hawks, are back home. The Lady Hawks started the season ranked #7 in NJCAA and were looking to get better. The team was 7-0 before falling in 5 sets to San Jacinto. The Lady Hawks refocused and were 22-1 (7-0 in the conference) ranked #2 in NJCAA before heading into the Florida State College at Jacksonville Tournament. They received their 2nd loss of the season from Central FL. With a record of 30-2 (8-0 in the conference) the Lady Hawks were named 2013’s Suncoast Conference Champions. The Lady Hawks had one goal going into the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 State Tournament; win and go to Nationals, and that is what they did. Now the Lady Hawks are 38-4; the best in Florida and FCSAA Champions. The team started the NJCAA as the fifth seed. The 1st win came against #12 MSU-West Plains in three sets. They pulled off the upset against #4 Iowa Western to set up a match with #1 Blinn. The Lady Hawks did not have an answer for the number 1 team and fell short in three sets. With a win over #6 Salt Lake, In the 5th set, they pulled it out. This great season also brought some individual accolades such as Player of the Week honors to Shelby Walker and Andrea Tauai.

IMG_5134Nicole Higgins, Antia Rodriguez, and Andrea Tauai were named to the All-state Tournament Team. Setter Mariam Maldonado was named Tournament MVP. Coach Larkin was named FCSAA State Coach of the Year.

Andrea Tauai was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row.
