WACO, Texas — University of Texas score 17 points in the 1st quarter and hold off the comeback by Baylor University.
The Baylor Bears started the game off by driving the ball down to the Longhorns 30 yard line. Baylor had two chances to get the 1st down but Texas was not having it and forced the turnover on downs. Chris Warren III busted a 8 yard and 5 yard run to start the drive. Before you could blink Texas was up 7-0. Tyrone Swoopes caught the defense looking in the backfield and made them pay by connecting with a wide open Caleb Bluiett for 57 yards.
The rest off the half was not good for Baylor. They had 2 fumbles, 2 interception and missed 2 field goals. One of those fumbles put the Longhorns in great field position. Tyrone Swoopes number gets called for the QB run and that is just what he did for the 9 yard touchdown. Texas was in control 20-0 at the half.
The Bears came out on fire in the second half. Johnny Jefferson and Terence Williams went to work on the ground going 8 for 69 yards on the first drive. Johnny Jefferson breaks a tackle on his 20 yard for the touchdown. Baylor scored a field goal on their second drive but I don’t think that is what they wanted. When you have 18 plays for 82 yards and eat up 8 minutes off the clock you have to get the touchdown. Once again Texas defense was not having it.
The third drive was 61 yards capped by Lynx Hawthorne on a 8 yds touchdown run. Texas extended the lead 23 -17 when Nick Rose split the upright for the 37 yd field goal with 4 minutes left in the game. The Longhorns pinned the Bears down to their 4 yard line. No problem because Baylor’s last touchdown drive only took 4:23 to complete. On the final drive Lynx Hawthrone (30 yards) and Corey Coleman (24 yards) keep them alive but in the end lose.
“We can go into the off season with something to build on!”
