Notre Dame escapes a hard fought battle 66-65 over South Carolina. In the first half Notre Dame jumped out to a 17-5 IMG_8025lead with 8 points coming from standout Brianna Turner.  Fans from South Carolina were already leaving for the gates. They should have stayed  because the missed a Gamecock 19-8 run lead by Alaina Coates.  With 2:44 left in the half  Jewell Loyd turned on another gear and pushed the lead to 30-24. South Carolina fought back again and were only down 32-28 at halftime.  Notre Dame was out scored 18-14 in the paint, but  was 5-7  (71%) from the free throw line.   Brianna Turner, Taya Reimer, and Jewell Loyd all had 10 points by the half. South Carolina needed 20 points from the bench to stay in the game.

IMG_8035In the second half the crowd seen its first tie when Gamecock’s Tiffany  Mitchell hit a layup to take the score to 34-34.  Jewell Loyd and Michaela  Mabrey pushed the score to 48-38.  A’ja Wilson was not having it! She score six points to bring her team back to 48-46. Brianna Turner got hot again adding 6 points to take  lead to 55-48

When Notre Dame Kathryn Westbeld hit the jumper with 7:51 left in the game  to take the lead to 64-52 Notre Dame may have felt like this one was in the bag. The Gamecock’s had a different plans and with 1:12 left in the game Aleigsha Welch hits a Layup to take the lead 65-64.  “I think a lot of people thought we were down and out .” The Fighting Irish stayed calm but knew they needed a score quickly.  They missed the shot , grabbed the rebound and ended the game.
It bounced right to me so I took it. Luckily it went in states Madison Cable.”
