Miami Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt was joined by junior running back Mark Walton and sophomore linebacker Shaquille Quarterman at the annual ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. Walton is coming off an impressive 1,117 yards rushing campaign, 240 yards receiving and 15 total td’s. Quarterman is coming off an equally impressive true freshman year with 84 total tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery.
Richt opened up being the head coach at the “U” for the second year “Year two, we understand how to do the little things right, and we understand how we want to go about our business, and the players, like I said, 80, 90 percent of them know exactly what we want to do and how we want to do it, so now it’s a matter of them perfecting their trade.”Walton spoke about his role with the team starting a new qb, yet to be named, and being more of a leader. “You know, as a leader on the offensive side of the ball, you’ve just got to make sure everybody is on one accord. I’m going to make sure I do my job picking up any blitz and making sure I hold my own blocking protection to give him enough time to make the right throws so he can be comfortable back there throwing the ball so he won`t have rush a decision and make a bad play. Just making sure he knows that I’m a trustworthy guy for him.”
A slimmed down Quarterman went on to speak about slimming down 15 pounds this year will help him at the linebacker position, “I’ve been working on getting slimmer, more in shape so that I can be more efficient and run as fast as I can for as long as I can so I don’t have to come off the field for any reason.”
Needless to say year 2 under Richt has everyone buying into the system and ready to improve on a 9-4 season from a year ago.
