Knights claims victory over the Spartans

Lynn University (8-2) reins victors over the University of Tampa (6-5) in the Sunshine State Conference for men’s basketball team held Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez athletic center. A tough loss for UT, the game resulted in a 6 point loss with a final score of 69-63.

Palve Raickovic led Lynn University’s men’s basketball team in scoring with a game high of 15 points which was matched by UT’s Eugene McCrory. This win over UT positioned Lynn University in its first 2-0 start since their 2011-12 season as the Spartans (University of Tampa) suffered its second loss in the SSC.

IMG_3229The Knights came out on top at the beginning of the first half with a 6-2 lead over the Spartans who quickly responded with a 7-0 run to capture a 9-6 lead. A back and forth rally between the two teams in the first half continued until the Spartans closed the half with a 7-0 run leading 33-25 over the Knights. In the opening half, Lynn shot 35.5 percent from the field while Tampa shot 46.2 percent. Raickovic led the team with 10 points for the Knights. Mcrory, for the Spartans, ended the half with a high of 12 points and four rebounds.

Tampa extended the lead at the start of the second half, 40-32. Lynn slowly fought back, ultimately, capturing an eight point lead of its own, 52-44. With 2:17 left to go Ben Berry, #22 Knights, knocked down a three-point shot. The Spartans retaliated with an 8-2 run, making it a two point game with under a minute left. Lynn pulled away with a six point in the final minute on seven free throws.

Berry held the team best of 13 points in the second half, three for four from downtown as well as six rebounds. The IMG_3274Knights shot 65.2 percent over the Spartans 32.1 percent in the second half. Lynn University not only outscored UT by 14 points in the final 20 minutes but also managed to out rebound the Spartans 18-13.
