MOBILE, Ala. — This game was suppose to be a test to see who would be in the driver seat to be the Sun Belt conference winner. Georgia Southern is coming off a tune up win against Savannah State 54-0. South Alabama is on cloud 9 after gaining some more respect for the conference with the 21-20 shocker over SEC’s Mississippi State Bulldogs. Special shout to Brandon Holloway from Tampa, Florida.
South Alabama’s Dallas Davis who is coming off a stellar 285 yard game with 2 touchdowns picked up right where he left off. The Jaguars are known for spreading the ball around and that is just what they did. On the 1st drive he connected with Maaseiah Francis, Xavier Johnson and Kevin Kutchera for 46 yards before the drive stalled. They were able to put 3 points on the board when Gavin Patterson nailed the 40 yard field goal.
Georgia Southern makes its living running the ball but new head coach Tyson Summers seems to be determine to make them just as dangerous in the air. Running back Matt Breida started off the drive with a 8 yard run. Favian Upshaw followed that with a 7 yard pass to BJ Johnson III. The offense 1st test of the drive came on 3rd and 12 at the Jaguars 41. Favian Upshaw’s pass to Wesley Fields for 24 yards was more than enough for the 1st down. They tried to punch it in but had to settle for a field goal from Younghoe Koo to tie the game 3-3.
The 1st touchdown of the day was a 1 yard power run by Georgia Southern’s L.A. Ramsby. He finished with only 12 yards today but look for him to make plays all year long.
South Alabama offense was able to move the ball well at times and even had a chance to tie the score before the half ended. The Jaguars were 1st and goal on the 3rd yard line after Tyreis Thomas just picked up 6 yards. After 3 plays netted -3 yards it was time to let Gavin Patterson add on the 3 points to try and save some pride. Georgia Southern 10 to South Alabama 6.
The Eagles opened the third quarter driving the ball 73 yards in 3:50 for the score. This drive had everything. A 25 yard run by Kevin Ellison. Two 1st down runs by Matt Breida. A False start and fumble / recover. A 25 yard pass from Favian Upshaw to BJ Johnson III on 2nd and 17 to help save the drive.
Finally a 5 yard untouched touchdown by Wesley Fields.
Georgia Southern 17-6 South Alabama
The last touchdown of the day was a 27 yard run by Kevin Ellison. The play started with a strong fake the opposite way. The blocking down field was beyond text book. Matt Breida was ready to receive the pitch if Ellison needed him. Kevin tucked the ball and took it to the house with ease.
Georgia Southern 24-6 South Alabama
South Alabama had plenty of chances to try and get touchdowns. They were inside Georgia Southern’s 30 yard line at least 4 times in the second half. Gavin Patterson was a prefect 3 of 3 kicking field goals today. The Jaguars will need to be able to finish drives if they plan to have a great year.
The Eagles did a great job racking up 304 yards on ground and the defense was outstanding.
