The University of Florida Gators are now 8-1 (6-1 in the SEC) after winning a close one against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Florida knew coming into the game they needed to win to punch the ticket for the SEC Title game.
The game started with Brandon Powell returning the opening kick 71 yards to Vanderbilt’s 23 yard line. The next play Jordan Scarlett breaks loose for a 20 yard run to set up 1st and goal on the 3. The Gators could not capitalize in the red zone and came away with nothing. Vanderbilt was able to get some offense going but the drive stalled at their 17th which resulted in a punt. The next drive Treon Harris had two big plays to help his team get back in scoring position. The 1st was a pass to DeAndre Goolsby for 24 yards and a 10 yard run on 3rd and 6. Kelvin Taylor capped the drive with a Touchdown run for 3 yards but Neil MacInnes missed the extra point. Florida end the quarter up 6-0.
The second quarter was not great for either team. Treon Harris threw an interception with 59 seconds in the half. Florida’s defense fell asleep on the next play allowed Ralph Webb to sprint 74 yard to a 7-6 halftime lead. I believe Ralph Webb from Gainesville would love nothing more than to spoil homecoming and the Gators chance at a Championship. Florida missed a great opportunity to take the lead when Demarcus Robinson fumbled the ball in the fourth with 5:29 left to play. All was forgotten when Austin Hardin split the uprights for 43 yards to take the 9-7 win.
Florida Head coach Jim McElwain stated “When you are on a championship run you are going to have games like this. Champions find away to win these game!”
Great Win Florida and see you in Atlanta!!
