The 2018 AdvoCare Classic between the Miami Hurricanes and the LSU Tigers is a matchup of two teams from what many consider the best conferences in college football in the ACC and the SEC. While there is a lot of conference pride at stake when the two teams face off at AT&T Stadium, fans of the Hurricane and Tigers must be hoping that their favorite team is leading their conferences at the end of the season.

Miami Wins if:

The Turnover chain makes several appearances. In the three losses to end the season Miami only forced four turnovers while the offense surrendered seven. Facing a first-time starter in Joe Burrow should give the swarming Hurricane defense plenty of opportunities to force turnovers, and they have to take advantage.

LSU Wins if:

Joe Burrow doesn’t play like a first-time starter. The last few years the Achilles heel for the Tigers has been inept quarterback play. There is enough talent on the defensive side of the ball, and while there will be new starters at receiver and running back, the key is the guy under center. If Burrow does not play like he is overwhelmed by the moment, the Tigers have a chance to pull this upset off.

Well the 2018 USF Spring Game between the white (Offense) and the green (Defense) was played this past Saturday in near perfect weather in front of around 3.500 fans. The white team featuring the USF offense barely beat the green team consisting of the defense, 56-55, in a unique scoring system featuring points for sacks, picks, and 3 and outs. The green dominated early but the offense got in a rhythm later on and started to put up some td’s.
Here are some quick observations from “Da Guru”
– The battle for the new starting qb will go into the fall camp as both challengers Brett Kean and Chris Oladokun had nearly identical numbers throwing for 127 yards a piece along with 2 td’s. Oladokun had the only turnover with a pick thrown early in the game and later on almost fumbled the ball on a bad option pitch. Head Coach Charlie Strong didn’t seem to favor either and stated “Both of them can make throws and operate the offense. That’s really what you look for.”
– 7 different RB’s carried the ball on Saturday with Dave Small getting the most carries with 11 and 39 yards rushing. This is another competition that will go into fall camp with Florida transfer Jordan Cronkite, Duran Bell Jr, Elijah Mack, and Trevon Sands all looking to compete for carries.

– For the WR’s, freshman Randall St. Felix had the best day totaling 4 catches for 65 yards, including a 31 yard TD.
– 6’3 JR Darnell Salomon had the best play of the day streaking down the left sideline for a 43 yard bomb TD from Kean. The QB stated that “”I think Darnell is one of the best receivers in the conference, if not the country”.
– Expect TE Mitchell Wilcox to have a much bigger year statistically than previous years as he was targeted 4 times in the air and came down with 2 catches. Word is that he might be used in the slot as well as being the starter at TE.
– The offensive line only had 7 players healthy enough to play Saturday and was probably playing without its 3 best players at the tackle positions. The game was actually switched to a running clock to help out with shortage of o-line.
– The defense dominated the game early and totaled 9 sacks for the game. Josh Black led the way with 2.5 sacks and safety Jaymon Thomas had the only turnover of the game with a pick. Expect the defense to be much improved from a year ago and to carry the team with so many offensive playmakers leaving the program.
– Bucs linebacker Kwon Alexander was a special guest on the defensive sidelines and wearing a green and gold shirt supporting the hometown Bulls.
– 2 paratroopers made an entrance dropping from a plane and landing on the field to give the honorary game ball.

Story by Yousaf Khan
The Amway Center in Orlando, FL, (home of the NBA’s Orlando Magic), will be the site of the American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament from March 8-11. Teams seeded 5-12 will play on Thursday March 8th with winners facing the top 4 seeds on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and it all culminating with the championship game on Sunday at 3:30.

The favorite going on would have to be #8 in the nation Cincinnati Bearcats, fresh off a win over Wichita State (62-61) that clinched the regular season AAC Championship. The Bearcats, with a record of 27-4, are led by their stingy defense, ranked 2nd in the nation allowing only 57.3 points per game. Cincy has 4 players average double figures in points, with Jacob Evans leading the way at 13.5.
Nipping right at their heels and another favorite to win it all is the Wichita State Shockers, ranked #11, and coming in with a record of 24-6. The Shockers have a pair of explosive scores in Landry Shamet and Shaquille Morris both averaging over 14 points per game.

The Houston Cougars, ranked #21 and with a record of 24-6, should make some noise as well. They split the series with both the Shockers and Bearcats at 1-1 and are very capable of winning it all. Conference player of the year candidate and all-around stud Rob Gray led the Cougars in assists in points at 18.1 ppg.

Locally, the hometown and 6th seeded UCF Knights, with a record of 18-12, hope to pull out a few victories together and draw some momentum from the local fans. The Knights will face 11th seeded East Carolina at 9PM on Thursday night. The last place, 12th seeded USF Bulls have a favorable matchup vs 5th seeded Memphis at 2PM on Thursday, a team they just beat by 24 on March 1st. Any wins at this point would be welcome for the Bulls after suffering through a dreadful 10-21 season under first year coach Brian Gregory.

“Da Guru”  will take Cincy and Wichita State to meet in the finals with Cincy taking it all.
Tickets and more information for the tournament can be found at

Info courteous of LSU ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS

Head Coach Ed Orgeron

Opening statement …

“We are really excited about Ja’Marr Chase and Kelvin Joseph. We want to welcome them to our great Tiger family. They are two of the best players in the state of Louisiana that we have targeted for a long time and two of the best players in the country, and they fit specific positions of need. We are excited to have those guys. Ja’Marr Chase out of Rummel High School, the No. 3 player in the state of Louisiana, is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound wide receiver with big hands and an excellent route runner. He had 61 catches for 1,100 yards and 14 TDs. He is a great character young man from a great family. His family was a joy to recruit. We brought the whole staff in his house, led by Mickey Joseph, Rummel High School’s Jay Roth. What a tremendous gift for the Tigers. He’s going to be a great, great receiver for us. He and Terrance Marshall Jr. remind me of Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. When we signed them back in the day. I wasn’t here, but I remember when we signed him. We expect that tandem to be great.

“Kelvin Joseph from Scotlandville High School is the No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana. Corey Raymond did a tremendous job of recruiting this man. He could have gone most places. Remember this, Kelvin Joseph decided not to take any other visits last weekend, was an LSU Tiger. We went to his home. His family is from Baton Rouge. They couldn’t be prouder to be LSU Tigers. Kelvin is 6-foot-2, 200 pounds. He’s going to play cornerback for us, which is a need position. He’s a very aggressive DB, who is a great tackler. He had 184 tackles, five interceptions, two forced fumbles and is just a tremendous young man from Scotlandville High School.

“Overall on this class, our emphasis this year was the state of Louisiana first. We signed eight of the top 10 players in Louisiana and 13 players from Louisiana overall, which we are most proud of. We wanted to add linemen, and we did with four offensive linemen and five defensive tackles. We needed to add receivers. We signed four receivers, including two of the top five receivers in the country. We needed running backs, and we signed two very talented running backs. One is already here. Remember this: nine of our signees are already enrolled and practicing with our football team right now. We are very pleased with that. As of now, we have two scholarships. As a plan, we did not want to waste our scholarships. We wanted to save them. Last year, we had scholarships available. We used them for Breiden Fehoko, Jonathan Giles and Thaddeus Moss. I’m glad that we had those scholarships available. We believe that Breiden Fehoko and Jonathan Giles will start for us this year and will be two of the best players on our team. Thaddeus Moss will add to the mix. We wanted to save those scholarships for either transfers from other Universities that will fit specific needs or graduate transfers, perhaps a graduate transfer at quarterback or cornerback. That’s the reason we didn’t sign 25. That was the plan and has always been a plan. If we don’t use those scholarships for transfers or graduate transfers, we feel that this is one of the top classes in the state of Louisiana. We can add them for next class. We are excited about what happened today. Obviously, we are disappointed with some of the losses, but you know what? We have the guys who want to fight for the Tigers, and we are proud of that.”

On spending time recruiting players and the flip at the last minute …

“It’s tough. One of those players was three years, maybe four. We put a lot of work into him. All indications the whole time was that he was coming here. The night before, you get a phone call, and he’s not. Obviously, you have to change your plan. That’s recruiting. We are happy with the guys that we got. We want guys who want to be at LSU.”

On the depth at cornerback …

“We are going to see. We have four cornerbacks right now on our team. We are going to look for graduate transfers that may be available. Obviously, we wanted to sign one more but we didn’t. That’s just the way it goes. We are going to find some guys that can play cornerback. We will be fine.”

On the changes that he will make next year in regards to recruiting …

“We are going to be more selective as far as in the beginning of the recruiting period because this year in the state of Louisiana we feel that we have some of the top players in the country. We are going to be more selective with our scholarships. We are going to fill specific needs. We are going to go to Houston a lot more. I think that this year is going to be a great year in Houston. We are already on top of some of the top players in Houston, in the state of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Stay close to home. All of the players that we lost and didn’t come here were from out of state. We feel that if we do a good job in state, we are going to do a good job at LSU.”

On the confidence in the wide receivers …

“We are very confident. We are very confident in Jonathan Giles. He was a guy that we couldn’t cover last year. Then, you add to the mix five new guys coming in. They all do things differently. They are all very talented. Obviously, four of them are young. I do believe having Terrace (Marshall Jr.) here early, I do believe Ja’Marr (Chase) is very close to our program and that he can pick up some things beginning in June. Kenan (Jones) can too. So can Jaray (Jenkins). All four of those guys are going to be expected to play for us next year. I feel that two of them may start for us. I know that Jonathan Giles right now is on our starting roster on offense. He’s one of our better players on offense, and I’m glad we have him.”

On this year’s recruiting class ranking …

“Let’s see what happens with this class. We have some defensive linemen and some offensive linemen who are very good. I trust in my rankings. I chose this class. I trust in my abilities to evaluate and develop better than anybody else. I’m not going to trust anyone else’s evaluation.  We could have had a higher class, and I understand that. We missed on some so-called guys. To get two of the best receivers in the country, that was something we wanted to do. To get five defensive tackles, to sign eight of the 10 guys in the state of Louisiana, we are proud of them.”

Atlanta, Ga — University of Central Florida Knights defense seals the 34-27 victory over Auburn University Tigers with an interception in the 2018 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Once the teams were announced everyone’s focus has been can UCF’s offense compete against Auburn’s defense? How will UCF fare against a real team from a real conference? Should the American Athletic Conference champion be consider great although they do not play anybody all year? How will they play knowing their coach has accepted another job? Well all those questions and more were answered today.

This game started off as a defensive battle that only the knights would expect them to play this well. This is the same team that gave up 42 points , 4 passing touchdowns and 500 yards to USF. The same team that gave up over 700 total yards and 7 touchdowns to Memphis in the AAC championship game. With those stats no way they should be up 13-6 at the half. The main thing that sticks out on the stat sheet is 5 sacks. O lineman Austin Golson stated ,”We were not communicating well. They outplayed us in the first half for sure.”

Halftime UCF 13- Auburn 6

The 3rd quarter started with Noah Igbinoghene breaking loose for a 72 yards kickoff return. Auburn fans went crazy! 2 plays later Jarrett Stidham connected with Will Hastings for the 26 yards touchdown! Hastings ended as the lead receiver 6 catches and 117 yards.

Score tied 13-13.  The knights could not get anything going so the ball was back in the tigers hand and they made it count. They put together a 10 play , 82 yard drive that was capped by another touchdown. The play that extended this drive was a 29 yards catch from Stidham to Darius Slayton on 3rd and 7 yard. Slayton ended the game with 5 catches for 69 yards.

Auburn 20 – UCF 13. At this point it was not looking good for UCF but the team or the fans did not seem fazed. It was if they were saying we have been here before and we will be fine. 2 drives later they were back in the endzone when McKenzie Milton connected with Otis Anderson for a 12 yards touchdown. Score tied 20-20 going into the 4th quarter.

UCF was clearly ready to win this game. The 1st drive ended with Milton connecting with Dredick Snelson for a touchdown. I could swear he said “That was Easy!” UCF 27 –  Auburn 20

At this point UCF is winning and right at the 27 points they need to win this game. The next drive Auburn was 3 and out and the ball was back into the knights hand. UCF was able to get in field goal positions and now have a chance to get 30 points. That would be the most given up by this outstanding defense all year. Well fan the tigers blocked the kick. Yes they blocked it! Derrick Brown was able to get a hand in there. Wow Wow!! Auburn fans were smiling from ear to ear. You can feel the momentum shifting in their favor. Then all hope was lost when UCF’s Chequan Burkett jumped a route and took it to the house for 45 yards.  UCF 34 –  Auburn 20

Auburn was able to get a score on a beautiful trick play but it was too little too late. The knights were able to get the win, finish 13-0, American Athletic Conference champ and now 2018 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Champs. #Go Knights

Final thought from former coach Frost “ I wanted to do it for them. I didn’t know if we had a chance or not, but I thought us coaches being here would give us the best chance. I can’t believe they did this. They pulled this off under these circumstances. It’s a credit to these players.”

With players like Quinton Flowers, Auggie Sanchez, Darius Tice, and so many more seniors playing their last game in the Birmingham Bowl the Bulls were in major need of some replacements. Well thanks to new the new early recruiting period last week, USF inked 24 players to letters of intent in one of the nation’s largest hauls. The Bulls have 5 more commits that can sign in early February and might snag another few players along the way. Needless to say coach Charlie Strong went fast and heavy to fill out the roster for the upcoming season.

The class is rated 56th overall by 247sports.com (scout) and includes 24 players with at least 3 star rating. The highest rated player is DE Stacy Kirby from Orlando, FL who was a FSU commit just a few weeks ago. 2 dual threat qb’s have already signed in Octavious Battle from Atlanta, GA and Jordan McCloud from nearby power Plant High School in South Tampa. Zion Roland from St. Pete figures to be the next playmaker in the receiving corps and center Brad Cecil from Bartram Trail in Jacksonville figures to anchor the offensive line in the future.
Several of these “Baby Bulls” could be in line for some major playing time or even possible starting positions if they prove themselves in the upcoming spring and summer sessions.

The University of Miami Football team started the new early recruiting period with a bang as they signed 19 of their 20 commits to letters of intent. The class was ranked #4 by Between Classes (The Guru), #1 by Between Classes (Stan Da Man), #5 by rivals, #6 by scout (247sports.com) and #4 by ESPN and had head coach Mark Richt giddy about the new signing period. The Hurricanes will look to add a few more players, maybe 7-10, once the traditional signing day comes rolling around on the first Wednesday of February.
The current class is headlined by a couple of skill players in 5 star running back Lorenzo Lingard out of Orange City, FL and 5 star wide receiver Mark Pope out of Miami per Rivals. The class has plenty of depth as well as 13 other players were ranked at least 4 star recruits by Rivals, including dual threat qb Jarren Williams out of Lawrenceville, GA. ESPN had 13 Hurricane recruits in their Top 300 list, including the number 1 TE prospect in Brevin Jordan.
Coming off a 10 win season, their first ACC championship appearance, a major bowl showdown vs Wisconsin, the Turnover Chain, and now a stellar recruiting class have the Canes rolling to become a major power in college football once again.
