Alabama Football Again

With the college football deep upon the season many things are beginning to take shape. So far there appears to only be three spots remaining due to Alabama Football appearing to be a juggernaut again. Led by South Florida native Jerry Jeudy and Heisman front runner Mr. Tua. It’s hard to imagine a team reckoning with Nick Saban and his Crimson machine. Scoring early and often is there theme and it seems like they may slow down no time soon.

Georgia what happened?

Among the other ranked teams several were either in dog fights or just lost potential chances to gain ground. LSU tigers defeated the #2 ranked Georgia Bulldogs after the tigers had lost to the Florida Gators. This knocked LSU from the top five rankings at the time however defeating Georgia bolster the tigers right back in to the thick of things.

Can Mark Richt be the man?

Miami was upset by Virginia and there is plentiful to discuss about however all that matters is wins. Questions are swirling if Mark Richt can ever compete for the big wins in big games and that question is now as of now. Maybe Miami can right the ship but help will be needed along the way.

Clemson still looking good

Nemesis the Clemson tigers are steadily moving along undefeated even though Former starter Kelly Bryant has moved to the University of North Carolina led by freshman Trevor Lawrence Running back from Louisiana Travis Etinne and a nfl defensive line. Will anyone be surprise if the Tigers meet up against Saban again.

USF and UCF remain undefeated

University of South Florida and Central Florida are both undefeated as well and it could set up for a top notch battle if they can continue, both teams avoided narrow defeat last week. USF has Jordan Kronkite who set a record with 300 yards rushing two weeks ago and is definitely one to watch a representative of South Florida and former transfer from the University of Florida Gators. University of Central Florida has not lost a game in recent memory and has the highest ranking among Florida schools.

Will UCF get lower than 10 in the polls?

Before the UCF game I spoke with my brother about UCF getting lower than 10 in the polls. He said as long as Georgia keeps winning he is fine. Well Georgia lost 36-16. Do not let the score fool you LSU’s kicker Cory Tracy had 18 points.

6,7,8 all fall helping UCF make the playoff

#6 West Virginia fell 30 – 14 to Iowa State. Brock Purdy was 18 of 25 for 254 yards with 3 touchdowns. David Montgomery ended with 189 yards and 1 touchdown.  #7 Washington lost 30 -27 to #17 Oregon in overtime. #8 Penn State was a 21-17 victim to Michigan State. Who job was it to stop Miles Sanders from breaking loose for 162 yards?

What are the Knights doing?

#Goknights

Now the Knights survived a near embarrassment from the Tigers. Memphis jumped  out to a 30-17 half time lead. The internet was going crazy. I was thinking this is their week to gain more respect for themselves and they playing like this. Darrell Henderson almost put up 200 yards on the ground. UCF should give the entire team the game ball. Defense pitched a shutout in the 2nd half, while the offense added the 14 points needed to seal the Comeback.  The Knights fan stuck through thick and thin. #GoKnights

The road is still tough

Cincinnati and USF are still undefeated and can help or hurt the chance of UCF staying Power 6 best hope. Neither one of these teams will be any easy win. The Bulls feel like they are the better team and would love to be in the AAC championship. Cincinnati was 4-8 last year and are undefeated as of now. With a balance attack  of Michael Warren (11 rushing touchdowns) and Desmond Ridder (10 passing touchdowns)

Look for UCF to make history and be in the playoffs.

With games like Alabama at LSU, Clemson vs NC State, Georgia vs Florida , Michigan at Ohio State left to be played. You may have NC State, Notre Dame, LSU and UCF. UCF will make the playoff!

The Comeback…

Well it was a crazy game that saw FSU winning 27-7 late in the third quarter and the game in hand as the Noles had all the momentum. A third quarter sack and fumble recovery by the Canes swung everything as the turnover chain made its debut and the offense scored on a 4th down to make it 27-14. Another turnover by Canes defense and another td by the offense made it 28-21 within 2 minutes of being 28-7. Miami took the lead for good with a beautiful 41 yard td pass from N’Kosi Perry to freshman tight end Brevin Jordan to cap off the biggest comeback in the Miami FSU series. Miami’s defense limited the Noles on offense the rest of the way as the Canes ran out the clock on the FSU 1 yard line.

Head Coach Mark Richt on the comeback…

During the recent ACC teleconference, Between Classes sports reporter Yousaf “Da Guru” Khan asked head coach Mark Richt about the comeback.
I’m looking back at last week, when you’re down 27-7 against a talented FSU team, how much doubt was in your mind? I know you had mentioned that you were maybe close to putting Rosier in the game. Were you worried at that point before that turnover came?
MARK RICHT: “Oh, that part, I don’t know. But I mean, was I worried? We were down 20. I mean, I knew something had to change pretty quick. You know, and was it the quarterback or was it just something had to change. But getting that turnover was big, and then being able to score the points afterwards was big. You know, N’Kosi didn’t play perfect by any means, but he played big when he had to and made some beautiful throws, and stood in there and handled the pressure of the day, and that’s big, and that’s just one more thing you can cross off the list of being able to experience.
I mean, I think most people know that was the greatest comeback in the history of the series, being down 20 and coming back and winning it has never happened in the history of that series. It’s been a big momentum series, and we certainly lost the momentum in a big way. And like I said, I was talking to someone earlier, a lot of people were expecting us to win the game and win by X amount of points and all that kind of thing, so you’re the favorite team, and then you go down 13 and then go down 20, I mean, how many teams at that time — at that point are in shock and can’t turn it around. That happens a lot. The favorite team gets behind, it wasn’t supposed to happen this way, and everybody is looking at each other like what’s going on, and then they just can’t recover. But we did recover. We recovered because we kept fighting and we made plays when we had to.”

Canes vs Noles at Hard Rock 3:30

The #17 Miami Hurricanes (4-1) and Florida State Seminoles (3-2) will square off in their annual rivalry game this Saturday at 3:30 PM in Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. “Da Guru” is going to breakdown the matchups.

Canes Offense vs Noles Defense

Redshirt Freshman N’Kosia Perry started his first game for the Canes last week and seemed to bring an energy to the entire team as the Canes cruised to a 47-10 win over UNC. He will face a tougher test this week against FSU and the athletes they bring to the table, one bad pass could be a pick six. The Canes will look to pound the Noles with their ground game as they already have 2 rb’s (Travis Homer and Deejay Dallas) with over 300 yards a piece on the year.

Then hit some intermediate throws their freshman TE Brevin Jordan and 6’5 WR Lawrence Cager. Mix in some deep throws to the speedy Jeff Thomas and you have a recipe for success that is translating to 44 points a game.
On defense the Seminoles fare much better against the run ranking 12th in the nation allowing 101 yards a game. On pass defense, the Noles ae allowing 284 yards a game ranking as one of the worst teams in the nation at 113th. The Canes will probably be forced to pass more than they like to play to the defensive weaknesses shown by the Noles. Some standouts for the Noles on D, include DE Brian Burns who has 5 sacks and AJ Westbrook leading the secondary with 2 picks.

Edge – Canes

Noles Offense vs Canes Defense

The Seminoles offense struggled mightily in 2 of their first 3 games against power 5 opponents getting outscored 54-10. They have been playing a lot better the last 2 games in wins, but still only averaging 22 points a game and now must face one of the elite defenses in college football. Offensively, the Noles are led by QB Deondre Francois throwing for 1.377 yards, 9td’s, 5 pint’s, on a 63% completion percentage.

The Seminoles boast a plethora of skill players in RB Came Akers (over 300 yards rushing) and WR’s Keith Gavin, Nyqwan Murray, and Tamorrion Terry who all have close to 250 yards receiving. The main issue is the offensive line not giving Francois time to throw or opening running lanes. There is some injuries as well which is not helping the cause as they must now face a talented Miami defensive front.
The Canes are second in the nation allowing only 245 yards a game in first tackles for a loss with 60 for the season while letting opponents only avg 16 points a game. Some standouts include DT Gerald Willis who has been playing like a man possessed which could translate into being a first round pick. LB Shaq Quarterman roams the middle of the field while end Joe Jackson terrorizes QB’s. Hopefully, all-American safety Jaquan Johnson will be back to play this game as he has been hampered by injuries. The turnover chain will probably be making a few appearances

Edge – Canes

Special Teams

The Noles have the clear advantage in the kicking game, as they have another Agayuo brother at kicker and much better punter. Jeff Thomas could take one back for 6 at any time and is an electric returner for the Canes.

Edge – Noles

Coaching, Intangibles

Willie Taggart is still getting his feet wet at FSU in his first season and still needs to bring in his players, while Mark Richt is in Year 3 of his tenure having brought the culture and identity he wants for this team. I would give the nod for coaching to the Canes and being played in Miami will give the Canes home field advantage where they have won 12 regular season games in a row.

Edge – Canes

Final Prediction

I expect the Noles to keep it close for 2-3 quarters, this is a rivalry game, but Miami should pull away late in the game.
“Guru” out!
Canes 34
FSU 20

Miami vs Florida State 2018

It’s Miami vs Florida State week and it’s already a tale of two tales.  Miami is coming in led by defense that is ranked among tops in the nation in most defensive categories.  Senior Gerald Willis is a dominant nose tackle and is making a case for the best at his position in all the land.  Miami should have enough talent to defeat the Seminole’s however in the best rivalry in the country anything can happen.

#ItsAllAboutTheU

Miami who hasn’t been favored in last eight meetings but did manage to stop the streak last year in Tallahassee.  Now Florida state is breaking in new coach Willie Taggert and he is trying to get things together in Tallahassee led by former ACC rookie of the year Deandre Francois And a respectable running attack at the position but their offensive line is a bit softer than expected this year.  That is not good news for Florida State because Miami’s strength is at the defensive line, with name likes Willis, Jackson, and Harvin to name a few.  Miami’s QB is a redshirt freshman from Ocala who is coming into his own and leads the team with seven touchdown passes although his first real playing time came against Florida international.

N kosi Perry is his name and throwing dimes is his game

N kosi Perry is his name and throwing dimes is his game.  Miami has never had a QB similar to Perry because he can extend the plays with his feet but continues to look down field and can escape to get first down if needed.  Some say he has similarities to Teddy bridgewater in terms of accuracy others say his style may be similar to Vince young but more accurate.

The Outcome

Whoever the comparisons are Miami feels confident they can defeat the Seminoles  handily but they may not let their guard down the season hasn’t gone accordingly to FSU standards and everyone knows the only thing more dangerous than an animal is a wounded animal and come Oct 6 the Hurricanes will face a angry, violent, and aggressive Florida State team who realizes on Sat they are the wounded animal but a victory would be a  super bowl type feeling Miami can not let their guard down for this rivalry. My prediction Canes 38/ Fla st 14

Seminoles in a Must Win Situation against Louisville

How is Florida State doing?

Florida State’s current record stands at 2 -2 which includes two losses against Power 5 opponents Virginia Tech and Syracuse, those two losses also happen to be conference games. They have one win against Mid-American Conference opponent NIU, and a win against Southern Conference opponent Samford. During the next few weeks FSU has a chance to get some conference wins under their belt.

Can we get a conference win or two?

Their conference run begins with a game against Louisville, who currently holds a two game win streak over them, followed by one of their two annual rivalry games against Miami (the other is against UF), and then the game against king of the conference, Clemson. Most people realistically believe that FSU can go 1-2 against this trio of teams, with the lone win coming against Louisville. There is some possibility, although small, of FSU coming out of the run 2-1 by adding a win against Miami but that’s if everything breaks right. Clemson is ranked #3 in the country, has the best defensive line in the country, and will more than likely be a double digit favorite even though their game against FSU is being played in Tallahassee.

The Game plan this week should be!

FSU needs to show that they can build off of the improvements shown last week against NIU in their 37-19 win. That includes limiting their turnovers, mainly fumbles, and establishing their run game. Winning against Louisville will go a long way in FSU trying to get bowl eligible. With FSU only having two wins so far, it’s hard to find four more wins on their schedule but it is possible. Their best chance to get a win is against Louisville who ranks among the worst teams in the country in many offensive categories. The issue with that is FSU does too, but their issues seem to be just a little more fixable than the ones that Louisville has.

The fans want some wins

If FSU can find a way to go 2-1 over their next three games expect it to generate some buzz among the fan base. With what fans know about this current team they will also take 1-2, but it wouldn’t generate the same type of excitement unless that one win is against Miami or Clemson. Make no mistake about it, the Louisville game is about as close to a must win game as you can get in order to try and salvage whatever respectability is left in the season.

Odds are there will be a new starting QB for the Miami Hurricanes when they play UNC on Thursday night as redshirt freshman N’Kosi Perry looks poised to take over. At Wednesday’s ACC Teleconference call when asked about who will start at QB, head coach Mark Richt said he knows but everyone else will have to wait until the Miami Hurricanes offense takes the field.

Turning point for Perry

The QB change started last week vs FIU when senior starter Malik Rosier started the first 2 drives but lead the team to zero points. On the third drive, coach Richt inserted Perry and never looked back. Perry led the team to a 24-0 halftime lead and finished the day 17/25 for 224 yards, 3 td’s passing, 1 pick, and 32 yards rushing. Canes fans have been waiting for this moment since Perry signed with the Canes in 2017 out of Ocala Vanguard as the number 3 rated dual threat QB by ESPN that year.

College Football Trend

Recently many high profile programs are starting highly regarded recruits over much more experienced and older QB’s. In last season’s title game freshman Tua Tagovailoa took over at QB at halftime and led the Crimson Tide to a title. This year Tua has been the starter over Junior Jalen Hurts (who was 25-2 as a starter) and is putting up Heisman numbers at Bama. Just this week #1 overall recruit Trevor Lawrence was named starting QB at #3 Clemson, and now demoted Kelly Bryant is transferring.

Next Level

Miami was doing fine with Rosier as he led the Canes to 10 wins last year and broke the Miami single season record for TD passes. However, Rosier had below average accuracy always hovering the low 50% range and was just inconsistent at times, especially on third down. He defiantly possessed poise and had the ability to come back as he lead Miami back several times last season in the 4th quarter, particularly against FSU and Georgia Tech. However, Richt must feel the time is now for Perry as he is mature enough to take over at the most important position for the “U” and get the Canes offense to the next level to match their elite defense.

FSU vs Northern Illinois 2018

Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State Seminoles now sit at 2-2 after defeating the Northern Illinois Huskies. Based on name value the game should not have been close, but that’s not the case with the Seminoles this season. The game was a must win for Noles and they handled their business.

FSU comes out the gate strong

Seminole fans had to be pleasantly surprised as the team started the game by driving right down the field to score a touchdown. Although it involved a little luck, such as the ball being deflected off of Keith Gavin, the touchdown reception by Jacques Patrick still counted for six. The Seminoles would follow that drive up by scoring a touchdown on their very next drive with a seven yard run by Cam Akers.

What made the first two touchdown drives for the Seminoles so impressive is that statistically, the Huskies had a top 15 defense. Before the game on Saturday afternoon, the Seminoles scored a combined ten points against the two Division I programs they faced. Scoring 37 against a tough Huskies defense can only help boost their confidence level going forward.

FSU on defense

On the other side of the ball the Seminole defense held the Huskies offense to 221 total yards, which included only six rushing yards. They added four sacks and three QB hurries. The defense only gave up one chunk play over 20 yards to the Huskies, a 66 yard touchdown reception by D.J. Brown.

The Seminoles weren’t perfect and were far from it in the game. With that being said, you saw improvement across the board, especially from the much maligned offensive line. For a team that has struggled under a new coaching staff implementing a new offensive and defensive scheme, improvement is all that you can ask for.

FSU seasonal outcome

Photo courtesy of College Press Box

As the season wears on and the players continue to get more comfortable in their roles and with the scheme, confidence and on-field play should continue to improve. The schedule only gets tougher for the Seminoles from here on out. While the scoreboard may not consistently favor the Seminoles going forward, it’s important to look at their growth on the field as they continue to improve and build for the future.

UCF football’s offense – McKenzie Milton’s 6 touchdowns

UCF football’s offense led by UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton has too much power in 56-36 win over FAU.

Making a statement!

UCF Knights wasted no time trying to put this game out of reach. They scored a touchdown on their first 2 drives to take an earlier 14-0 lead. The Owls 1st big play to get them rolling was a 24 yards run by Gerald Hearns on 4th and 4. FAU’s run game is normally in the hands of Devin Singletary. Last year as a sophomore Devin Singletary racked up 1,920 yards and led the nation in rushing touchdowns with 32. He capped the 11 plays 71 drive with a 11 yards run to get the Owls on the board. 14-7 “UCF”

FAU is making their own statement

The next drive for FAU they went for it again on fourth down and were successful again. Singletary capped the drive again but this time was a 9 yards touchdown. 14-14 all (Do we have a problem?)

The Owls are starting to look good. Their next drive really had UCF defense in trouble. It all started on 3rd and 13 on

Devin Singletary goes for 131 yards and 3 touchdown against UCF

FAU’s 39 yard line. Chris Robinson pass to Jovon Durante was for only 6 yards but UCF was penalized for roughing the passes. Automatic 1st down. Did Devin Singletary take it personal because the next two rushes were for 10 and 11 yards which put FAU on UCF’s 19 yard line. 4 and 1 on UCF’s 14 yard line FAU was called for a false start which resulted in the Owls settling for the easy field goal 17-14 (FAU).

UCF’s quick strike

FAU defense apparently skipped the video showing how quick UCF’s offense can score and how dangerous their receivers are. Milton connected with Marlon Williams for a 9 yards catch then Dredrick Snelson for 23 yards. Then back to Snelson for 21 yards and then Williams caps the drive with a 21 yards TD Catch. One minute and 3 seconds UCF’s offense puts the knights up 21-17 at the half.

McKenzie Milton getting another score on the ground. #Goknights

McKenzie Milton on scoring so quick at the end of the half “We practice for those situations.”

Halftime adjustments

I have no idea what was said at half time but the hash tag #chargeon sums up the 3rd quarter. UCF out scored FAU 21-6. Everyone on UCF’s team that wanted to touch the ball touched the ball this quarter. Milton was 8 of 10 for 93 passing yards. Greg Mccrae, Adrian Killins, and Taj McGowan all did a fantastic job running the ball. “UCF” 42- 23 “FAU”

Both teams scored 2 more touchdowns in the 4th quarter and FAU eventually lost 56-36.

Top players

UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton 306 yards and 6 touchdowns( 3 passing, 3 Rushing)

FAU running back Devin Singletary 131 yard and 3 touchdowns

UCF receiver Gabriel Davis 5 catches , 91 yards and 1 TD

3 Interception for the Knights but Shawn Burgess-Becker was able to take in back to the house for a 40 yards touchdown

UCF is coming off 2 easy wins (UConn and South Carolina St.) and had their last game cancelled (vs North Carolina) due Hurricane Florence. This is the second year in a row that UCF will have to cancel a game vs a power 5 opponent due to a hurricane as the Georgia Tech game was cancelled last year.

UCF knights on offense

New coach Josh Heupel has the Knights rolling on offense again this year as they have averaged over 300 yards rushing and 300 yards passing per game. QB McKenzie Milton looks to get back on Heisman lists after struggling a little bit in his last game with 3 picks. The ground game is always in good hands with the explosive Adrian Killings Jr and Otis Anderson handling the rock.

UCF knights on defense

Defensively the Knights will need to key on RB Devin Singletary who has 7 td’s rushing on the year and ran for over 2,000 yards last season.
