LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern University wrestling coach Javier Maldonado signed George Jenkins High School senior wrestler Ethan Owen to a letter of intent today, during a ceremony at the school.Owen becomes the first member of the inaugural wrestling recruiting class at Southeastern, which will begin competing in the Winter of 2015.
During his senior season, Owen went 52-5 at 145 pounds and finished fourth at the FHSAA State Finals in 3A. “Being a part of something so new and so profound is an honor,” said Owen. “To be the first of anything is a privilege, and to be the first signee for the SEU wrestling team is a dream come true.” Owen was also named the outstanding wrestler at the Flagler Rotary Invitational, and has been named All-Polk County. As a junior, he finished second in the state at 132. “Ethan is a great kid that comes from a great family, as is the perfect fit to start the wrestling program at SEU,” said Maldonado. “He knows what is expected of him and he is ready for the task at hand.”
Southeastern is currently the only scholarship collegiate wrestling program in the state of Florida.
