Game of the Week:
#3 Clemson at #14 Louisville (8:00 PM ABC)
After surviving against Auburn last week 14-6, the defending champs get another major test in reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals. Clemson might arguably have the best defensive line in the nation, especially at defensive tackle where they possess 2 All-American candidates in Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence. The Louisville offensive line does look improved from last year but we all remember how Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver manhandled them in getting a number of sacks. That being said Lamar Jackson is on fire to begin the season and the Clemson offense better put some points up or they will lose this game. I think this game will come down to the wire but Clemson should come out on top with the championship mentality.
Prediction: Clemson 35, Louisville 27
Tennessee at #22 Florida (3:30 PM on CBS)
Gator nation is looking to get back on track after losing in week 1 and having the game last week cancelled because of Hurricane Irma. The Gators now face SEC East rival Tennessee at home and don’t want to start the season at 0-2. The problem for the Gators, as it has been for a number of years, is the offense just not producing points or big plays. Tennessee had a big come from behind win against Georgia Tech in OT in week 1 that showed this team has some character. On defense the Gators will also have to deal with Vols QB Quinten Dormady and big play WR Marquez Callaway. In the end just don’t see Florida putting enough points to win the game, especially with the uncertainty at QB.
Prediction Tennessee 24, Florida 16
Illinois at #21 USF (7:00 PM on ESPN on Friday 9/15)
The Bulls are back at home for a Friday night game as the game at UConn was cancelled last week. This is the only matchup on the schedule against a power 5 opponent and the Bulls hope to showcase their team in front of a national audience on ESPN after a dud win at home vs Stony Brook. The Bulls should be energized to play at home as the Tampa Bay area is still recovering from Hurricane Irma. Looks for that improved Bulls defense to shut Illini on offense and QB Quinton Flowers and the running game putting up some big plays to guide the Bulls to victory.
Prediction USF 31, Illinois 17
#12 LSU at Mississippi State (7:00 PM ESPN)
The Tigers get their first true test of the year as they travel to Starkville, MS to face SEC West foe Mississippi State. Big play DE Arden Key is available for this game and should make his presence known. This game will probably be a defensive slugfest and I favor LSU as the have superior RB in the “Guice” and the better defense. Look for Derruis Guice to go for another 100 yards and 2 td’s and the defense to have a few big turnovers.
Prediction LSU 24, MSU 13
*** The Miami vs FSU game originally scheduled for 9/16 has been postponed to 10/7 due to the effects of Hurricane Irma.
*** The UCF vs Georgia Tech originally scheduled for 9/16 has been cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Irma.
*All games Saturday 9/16 unless otherwise noted.
“Da Guru’s” record for last week 1-1, on the season 9-1.
