What a slow start for the first home of the season as Clark Atlanta University Panthers takes on Lane College Dragons. Coming from a loss on the road, the home team struggled in the first half of the game with three turnovers and the inability to score during the five times they were in scoring position. Luckily for them, neither team was able to score in the first quarter; however, Lane was able to put points on the board with a 45 yard field goal before halftime. Score was 3 – 0, Lane college with the lead.
Lane continued putting points on the board as they scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. The Panthers now enter the last quarter with a 17 point deficit. The momentum in the fourth quarter began to change. Clark Atlanta’s junior Joshua Tate captured an interception during the first possession of the quarter, providing him and his teammates with enough energy to capitalized off of Lane’s turnover. Sophomore Montavious Taylor was next to deliver for the Panthers with 41 yard run and third down conversion, putting them in scoring position yet again. Shaquan Mitchell, freshmen out of Dublin, Ga, secured the 5 yard touchdown run officially putting CAU on the board.
Clark Atlanta continued their impressive comeback as Marquis Abernathy, freshmen, recovered a fumble from Lane’s attempted drive. Abernathy returned the fumble for a 32 yards touchdown, leaving Lane with only a 4 point lead. Lane was forced to punt by CAU aggressive defensive. Mitchell delivers again with a second rushing 55 yard touchdown leaving 2:52 seconds on the clock. The Panthers secured their first lead of the game 20-17. Lane was unable to answer to Clark’s relentless defense as Tate picked up his second interception he returned for a 90 yards gain sealing Lane’s fate. Final score 20 – 17 as CAU claims the victory.
This might be a new year for Clark Atlanta’s football team. Sealing a victory this early on in the season raises high hopes from the team, coaches, and fans as they celebrate. Without a band, fans focus their attention towards the football and their impressive comeback. CAU next game will be held at Ft Valley State University, Sept. 20th at 6pm against the Wildcats. Their next home game will be Sept. 27 at 2pm against West Georgia, Panther Stadium.
