Main Birmingham Bowl LogoWell college fans a lot has changed since we wrote our pregame article. Coach T has left us for University of Oregon and we welcome coach Charlie Strong.  The BIRMINGHAM BOWL started like we planned it but the finish should not have been that close.  The Bulls won the coin toss and went to work. On the opening kickoff D’Ernest Johnson got the offense great field position after going 46 yards.

Unfortunately they were not able to capitalize and the drive stalled after an incomplete pass on 4th and 3.  The Bull Shark defense got the ball back when South Carolina’s Jake Bentley second pass of the day connected  with South Florida’s Devin Abraham .  The offense was back in business and after 7 plays and 46 yards Quinton Flowers was in Touchdown land. The move to try the 2 point conversion was exactly what was need to show we are not here to make friends or take prisoners. USF 8 – USC 0

The Gamecocks next drive stalled after 3 plays and the ball was back were it belonged in the Bulls hand. USF next drive showcased just how dangerous they have been all year. D’Ernest Johnson started it off with a 5 yard run. Flowers added 1 more yard, then back to Johnson for a 12 yard pass. Johnson 2 yard run then another 5 yards receiving. You start to see a pattern then Tyre McCants , Rodney Adams and Marlon Mack add 27 yards. Right when the defense don’t know what to expect , Quinton Flowers gashes you for 24 yards on the ground. Then has the nerve to cap it with his second rushing touchdown of the day. Usf 15 -USC 0

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp stated , “They’ve got some explosive guys on offense. They’ve scored a bunch of points against everybody they’ve played. Our athleticism and speed on defense has got to improve; that’s very evident when we play faster teams. ”

#beatusf was asking where is the defense and can the defense get a break?

Quick Note- USF 1st quarter rushing was 97 yards. Quinton Flowers was 10 of 11 for 86 yards.

South Carolina came out on fire the 2nd quarter to the tune of 4 plays , 80 yards and a touchdown.  Jake Bentley connected with Hayden Hurst for 18 and 25 yards.  Hayden Hurst didn’t even break stride on his one handed touchdown. Usf 15 -USC 7

DSC_0736We not going to spend much time on this USF used their same mix of Flowers, Mack, Johnson, McCants and Adams to push the lead to 29-14 at the half. At this point USF was looking good and their 1st win against a SEC team was looking near.

In the 3rd quarter Deebo Samuel  gave the Gamecocks hope when he crossed the end zone for his 2nd score of today cutting the lead to 29-21. Samuel ended with 190 yards on 14 catches, 1 rushing TD and 1 receiving TD. He also set records in Most Receptions 14, Most Receiving yards  190,  and Most All-Purpose yards 290.  South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp stated , “He’s an explosive guy, his lower body is very strong, he runs through contact. He’s a really good football player.”

Their next drive should have been all she wrote,  fat lady singing and warm up the bus when Tajee Fullwood to the pick 6 46 yards to the house. USF 39 – USC21 The Bull Shark defense must have got full and got out the water. There is no way you give up 18 unanswered points after we have been bashing #beatusf. We almost had to take back everything we said.  Great job Quinton Flowers , Elkanah Dillon and the redeemed Bull Shark defense on closing out the 46-39 win . Final thoughts from MVP Quinton Flowers “A lot of big schools didn’t give me a chance and wanted me to play a different position. South Florida was the place that loved and cared about me and wanted me to be their quarterback. I got here and my plan was to make a change and the team that made the change and now we’re 11-2.”

The question now is will Quinton Flowers be back and how Charlie Strong plans to top this? Look to see USF break ground on a new stadium or conference really soon.
